Jim McCartney has mediated or arbitrated more than 1000 disputes involving commercial, industrial, public sector and residential construction, architectural services, franchise agreements, fatalities, vehicle accidents, employment, corporate dissolution, debt, shareholder agreements, trusts, tenancy, disability, insurance, industrial land sales, government contracts, fires, pipelines, petroleum versus coal exploration & development rights, environmental monitoring agreements and other matters.
He is a Chartered Mediator and Chartered Arbitrator, Past President of the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society, and a Director of the ADR Institute of Canada. He is on the mediation rosters of the Provincial and Queen’s Bench courts, the General Insurance OmbudService, the Alberta Land Surveyors Association, and the Energy Resources Conservation Board. He is on the arbitration rosters of the Canadian Transportation Agency, the Better Business Bureau and the Alberta New Home Warranty Program, and Chair of three NEB Pipeline Arbitration Committees.
Appointments have included three terms on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta discipline and appeal tribunals and sanction agreement panels and to the Bid Protest Panel pursuant to the Alberta Agreement on Internal Trade. He is a frequent presenter to lawyers, students, and others on arbitration, mediation, and negotiation.
