Carl Nilsen is a Senior Director of Altus Group Limited and has been providing professional services in Canada since 1972.
Carl founded the firm of Nilsen Realty Research Ltd. (which subsequently became part of Altus Group) after gaining real estate qualifications and experience in London (England) and Toronto. Mr. Nilsen’s practice has involved the preparation of specialized studies and appraisals for both the public and private sector including financial institutions, pension funds, provincial and local governments and development companies as well as legal and accounting firms.
Mr. Nilsen has been retained on a regular basis to provide expert evidence before courts and arbitration boards concerned with the establishment of rental value or market value in expropriation, property assessment, lease rent review/renewal and other proceedings. He has given evidence before the Property Assessment Appeal Board of BC, the BC Supreme Court, the BC Expropriation Compensation Board and the Federal Court (Trial Division).
He has been appointed as a Valuator under the B.C. Hydro and Power Authority Act, and has acted as an arbitrator in matters relating to rent review or real estate valuation on over 25 occasions. In that capacity, he has been appointed as a single arbitrator or as a member of an arbitration panel.
Mr. Nilsen has been engaged on many occasions to speak on real estate valuation and arbitration matters to organizations such as the Appraisal Institute of Canada, the BC Expropriation Association and the ADR Institute of Canada.
